HOLY CRAP! Did you see that meteor that streaked through the sky and EXPLODED in Russia overnight??? The Russian town of Chelyabinsk came under attack Friday morning…from a meteor shower. Unsuspecting residents of the area in the Ural Mountains more than 900 miles east of Moscow reported seeing bright lights in the sky as well as hearing explosions, with some fearing it was an enemy attack. While at least that fear could be discounted, the meteor shower did a fair amount of damage, blowing out windows and reportly sending hundreds of people to hospitals, mostly with cuts from broken glass. As many as 20,000 first responders were reportedly heading to the scene while there were also reports of people trying to flee for their lives. Residents with gaping holes where their windows were also had to contend with frigid temperatures of 0 degrees Fahrenheit in addition to being scared out of their wits. Meanwhile, school kids got the day off on account of the meteor. While Chelyabinsk got the worst of it, Russian state officials confirmed that a few other regions of Russia and Kazakhstan were also hit by the shower. One scientist on Russian TV said he thought it might have been a single meteor weighing tens of tons. Meanwhile, A 150-foot asteroid is destined to make the closest known flyby of Earth for a rock of its size today! NASA promised the asteroid would miss Earth by 17,150 miles, avoiding catastrophe. But that's still closer than many communication and weather satellites; scientists insisted these, too, would be spared. Asteroid 2012 DA14, as it's called, is too small to see with the naked eye even at its closest approach around 2:25 p.m. EST, over the Indian Ocean near Sumatra. Let's hope someone has Bruce willis and Ben Affleck on standby JUST IN CASE!
